Roger Dent's hard work has paid off. The seventeen year old has transformed himself into one of the hardest workers in the LIAC national team program over the past two years. He has been making great strides, steadily dropping times.

At the Eastern Zone Championships Dent walked away with four individual gold medals and a meet record in the 400 IM. Roger won the 100m Fly (58.71), 200m Fly (2:09.59), 200m IM (2:11.74) and the 400m IM with a new meet record of (4:38.59).

Junior National Recap

Some teams may tell you they qualify to go to Junior Nationals, which is true. However, what they don't tell you is that other teams on Long Island, such as LIAC, not only qualifies for Junior Nationals, but scores on a consist basis year to year.

This past August, LIAC swam against the best 18 and unders in the country and placed 8th overall at the USA Junior National Championships. It was a great end to a year of efforts for nine LIAC swimmers who traveled to Irvine , Ca. for the 5 day event. LIAC competed well against the best in the country, going after every race and representing LIAC in a way that should make us all proud.

Highlights in the scoring (Top 8 Swim):

Daphne Skelos. Daphne has been a part of LIAC's team since the wee age of 6! She has always been and still is one of the hardest working athletes LIAC has. Due to her caring personality and her dedication to swimming, she is viewed as a role model by the younger athletes of LIAC. Placing 1 st in the 200 back at Juniors, she is now known as a Junior National Champion. She also placed 4th in the 100 back.

Liz Goldson. Liz, another dedicated LIAC swimmer, also ended the year with fantastic swims. She has took some of our younger swimmers under her wing and for that, along with her hard work, she is one of the most valuable swimmers LIAC has and loves. Liz placed 4th in the 400fr, 5th in the 800fr, 7th in the 200fr, and 8th in the 1500 fr.

Emily Kelly. Emily is one of LIAC's younger superstars, who has recently broke out of her shell. At only the age of 14, Emily swam out of her mind, making it back to finals, placing 8th in the 200fr.

Tom O'Neill. Tom's dedication and determination is looked greatly upon by many swimmers. Not a day goes by where Tom doesn't give his all in practice or a meet. His determination helps bring out the best of people in practice. Tom swam an amazing 1500 free, placing 7th overall.

In addition, our Women's 800 Free Relay placed 5th. The relay team was comprised of Emily Kelly, Erica Derlath, Daphne Skelos and Liz Goldson.

Rounding out the team were Julia Festa, Sean Lane, Bobby Smith and Jack Wagner all who had outstanding swims. Great job everyone.

Skelos qualifies for OLYMPIC TRIALS!
Congratulations to Daphne Skelos for qualifying for Olympic Trials in the 200 backstroke. She swam a 2:15.65 in prelims and placed 8th overall at Nationals last week. Great job!
LIAC takes 2nd Overall at Sectionals!!

Missing from picture Julia Festa & Natalia Festa
Congratulations to those who swam at the Sectional Meet this past weekend. Out of 105 teams, Long Island Aquatic Club placed 2nd overall! Those who made it back to finals and helped score for the team include the following: Roger Dent (200 Fly, 400 IM), Erica Derlath (1500 fr, 400 IM, 400 Fr, 800 Fr), Julia Festa (1500 free, 800 free), Natalia Festa (100 Back), Liz Goldson (200 Fr, 400 IM, 400 Fr, 100 Fr), Emily Kelly (1500, 50, 200, 400, 800, 100 Fr), Keri Masterson (100 Fl), Tommy O'Neill (800, 400, 1500 Fr), Daphne Skelos (200 IM, 100 Back, 400 IM, 200 Back), Bobby Smith (100, 200 Bk), Jack Wagner (100 Fr) Christina Brodt (400, 800 Fr Relay), Jenna Daly (400, 800 Free Relay), Chris Finnegan (800 Fr Relay).

In addition, Emily Kelly took 2nd and Daphne Skelos took 9th overall for high point!
LIAC's DeMarco Qualifies for World Championships!

Dan DeMarco finished 4th in the USA Open Water Championships on June 4th, held in Fort Meyers, Florida.  His time 1:50.17 was within 10 seconds of the winner and defending World Champion.  By finishing in the top 4 DeMarco qualified for the 10K World Open Water Swimming Championships to be held in Naples, Italy August 28th to August 31st.

DeMarco is a 2 time National Champion in the 10 K event having competed for the United States in the 2003 World Championships and the 2004 Pan American Games where he won the gold medal.  After the Pan American Games Dan retired from competition.  In December of 2005 the International Olympic Committee announced the addition of the 10K Open Water Swim to the Olympics being held in Beijing.   As a result, Dan started his come back this past February.

With only 15 weeks of training and the fastest USA Championship field in history DeMarco’s accomplishment of qualifying for World Championships is an outstanding one.  But when you add to that what happened to Dan on his way out to the starting line the swim becomes nothing short of remarkable.

On the way out to the starting line DeMarco stepped on a shell that became imbedded in his foot right next to the bone.  With less than a minute to go before the start and with World Champs on the line he realized there was nothing that could be done and as he said “went with it”.  It was only when he came out of the race limping and still bleeding did anyone realize that he was hurt.  As it turned out, Dan was operated on two days later by Dr. Scott Rodeo the head of the medical committee for USA Swimming and a surgeon in New York City.  Thanks to Dr. Rodeo Dan’s back in the water this week training for World Championships.  All of us at LIAC wish him well, and Dan “stay off the shells”.
