Swimmer of the Meet:
Racing at Rutgers
21 Junior A athletes joined over 160 LIAC teammates at the annual Berkeley Rutgers Memorial Day Invitational. The meet is always competitive and takes place at the beautiful pool at Rutgers University. This year the meet was a bit smaller than years past and many races ended up just being ‘LIAC vs. LIAC’ but we still took advantage of the opportunities to race.

For many athletes this was their 3rd long course meet within a month (LI Challenge, Spring Kickoff and then Rutgers). We swam many of the same events and still saw some nice time drops. We had 61 best times of 111 swims, a 54% best time rate. Not our best for a meet, but again, many athletes were again swimming the same events they had just two weeks prior. This meet is the beginning part of the season of understanding racing, understanding strategy, and understanding technique. All will be important come July and JOs and Zones!
A special shout out to James Darcy, Regan Fried, and Patrick O’Hagan who each won three individual events. Andrew Koek swam an awesome 100 Breast and Erica Sava was our swimmer of the meet- Erica dropped time in 5 of her 6 races!
Next up is our LIAC hosted Summertime Classic meet 6/9-6/10. Many athletes will be swimming ‘different’ events or 200s of stroke (Fly, Back, Breast) for the first time. Gabi and I are looking forward to seeing these races!
Next up after that is Texas/Summer Fun then Sandbox then JOs! We have a countdown on our whiteboard at the Freedom Pool counting down the number of practices left until these milestone meets. It will go by fast! Every day, every workout, every set is important!
Kicking it up and down the pool at Spring Kickoff!
Another great weekend of racing for Junior A at the LIAC Spring Kickoff. Most athletes competed in different events from LI Challenge and had an opportunity to improve on their times from last season, and boy did we! 131 best times, 34 New Times, and an 88% PB percentage! We had many athletes drop huge amounts of time in their 400 Freestyles, an incredibly important event in our long term development as all around swimmers. We had multiple AAAA or ‘Quad A’ times, new Zone cuts, new JO cuts, new AAA, AA, A, and Sandbox cuts. All in all, a very successful weekend!

A great meet after a great week of work from T-Shirt week. A quick story from T-Shirt week. On Wednesday, Savanah and Regan were battling it out for the shirt. Stroke for stroke through the end of the main set. Gabi and I love that the athletes are getting excited for the shirt each night, but this was another level of fast swimming! We debated for some time who we would give the shirt to. In the end that day we gave it to Regan, congrats! She worked hard on dryland and in the pool that day. More than deserving of the shirt. What really struck me was how happy for Regan Savanah was. Savanah seemed almost more excited for Regan than she would have been for herself. This was really awesome to see, a commitment to the team and excitement for the success of those around us. Way to support your teammates, Savanah!
Next up- Rutgers and Summer Classic. JOs is just two months and 10 days away! The summer season flies by. Buckle up, it is gonna be a fast and crazy ride!
Long Course is here….and Junior A is READY!
Spring is finally here…which means it is time for some real swimming- LONG COURSE! Our first long course meet of the year was the Long Island Challenge. The first long course meet is always a positive experience, swimmers are dropping huge amounts of time because many have not competed long course since last season. Even those who competed in the January Rutgers long course meet saw some big drops. We even had athletes beating their ‘converted times!’
When I am talking big drops I mean HUGE! We had a 92% best time percentage in our 163 races and had 9 new times for a total time drop of 933.42 seconds! We had athletes qualifying for LC JOs, LC Zones, Sandbox, new A, AA, AAA, and even a AAAA times! Here we go…!
