200s of Stroke in the Dead of Winter!
This past weekend, Junior A competed at the Badger Mid-Winter Invite. This is always a tough meet. We are in a heavy training period this time of year and the athletes are all very tired and sore. Our training was brought to a whole new level the week leading into the meet as it was T-SHIRT WEEK!
A reminder of T-SHIRT week. Gabi and I select a boy and girl athlete each night who “won” the practice. Winning practice does not mean being the fastest person in the pool (although those swimmers did win at times!). A swimmer who goes above and beyond, has an amazing set, and is following along on the set is a candidate for the shirt. When a swimmer wins the shirt, they sign the shirt and swim a 100 of their choice with the shirt on. This week the t-shirts have been up on display as a Badge of Honor at the Freedom Pool.
We swam 24 new times at the Badger meet and achieved almost 60 % PBs. We are at a point in the season where swimmers are zeroing in on cut times or expanding their events for Silvers, JOs and Florida. It is about racing right now and getting the details down right!

NYSA Season Starter- "Get off the blocks and RACE!!"
Junior A kicked off the 2017-2018 short course season on Saturday 9/30 at the New York Sharks Aquatics Season Starter in Suffern, NY. The meet was split by age groups, 9 & Under, 10 year olds, 11 year olds, and 12 year olds. It was fun to watch swimmers compete solely against their single age groups!
The goal of this meet was not to necessarily achieve our best times, but instead just an opportunity to get up off the blocks. No fast suits, no rest, just racing. For some of our Junior A swimmers we haven’t been “off the blocks” since July!! Most swimmers competed in the 200 IM, 100 Free, and a fun 50 event. Our goal was to use the 200 IM and 100 Free to set ‘benchmark’ times for the beginning of the season. “Let’s see where we are at!!”
