About the Project

Every day thousands of recreational and competitive swimmers, tri-athletes, divers, SCUBA divers, and fitness buffs utilize the Nassau County Aquatic Center. To be sure, on many days there isn't enough space to service all the groups and people who want to use the pool between 3:30pm and 9:00pm.

Long Island Swimming a 501-c3 not for profit is willing to build, operate and Maintain an auxiliary pool next to the aquatic center at no cost to the county. This will almost double the available lane space and relieve the overcrowded conditions that often exist. The new pool will allow for outdoor swimming during the summertime. The second 50 meter pool will allow the Aquatic Center to once again host the large national and international events that will make an economic impact on Nassau County.

By having a not-for-profit pay for the building, maintenance, and utilities of the auxiliary pool, the county will have all of the additional revenue without the burden of the maintenance, utilities, and debt service of the facility. This will make a significant impact to the bottom line of the Aquatic Center.

What is the Auxiliary Pool Project?

Long Island Swimming has contracted with Nassau County to build, operate, and maintain a 50 meter x 25 yard world class competitive pool. During the months of May - September the pool will be outdoors. Between October and April the pool will be covered by a fabric structure. The size of the fabric structure is approximately 100 feet x 200 feet. A separate mechanical room (approximately 4,000 sq. feet) will be constructed to house pool filtration and heating equipment.

How will the Pool Project work?

Long Island Swimming will pay Nassau County a graduating yearly base fee and % of yearly revenues for the life of the license. Long Island Swimming will be completely responsible for the cost of maintaining the Myrtha Pool facility. Nassau County will have exclusive use of over 52% of the pool time available including the prime outdoor summer time of 10:00 am - 4:00pm. Nassau County will keep all revenues its usage of the Myrtha Pool generates.

What are the benefits to Nassau County?

The addition of the Myrtha pool to the Nassau County Aquatic Center will increase by over 80% the amount of lane space available to all. Contrary to popular belief the Aquatic Center does not have sufficient space during the prime time for all who are looking to utilize it.

1. Nassau County will be able to expand its available pool time to residents and groups throughout the day as a result of the additional lane space provided by the Auxiliary pool. The County will have the ability to generate additional revenue this way. The total Aquatic Center yearly revenue when including the Long Island Swimming base fee will increase from its current levels.

2. Nassau county will truly have the complete facility it was meant to be and which is necessary to host the top tier revenue producing national and international competitions. Since 2003 USA swimming has selected only facilities with two 50 meter pools to host the Summer National Championship / World Championship Trial events. The addition of the auxiliary pool will put the County back in competition to host these events and provide the surrounding community with a great economic impact and revenue in the form of hotel and sales taxes for the county.

3. Currently the days in which the Aquatic Center is licensed for local competition, the availabililty of the pool for public and group swimming is reduced or eliminated altogether. With the Auxiliary Pool the Aquatic Center will be able to remain open for swimming during almost all competitive events. This will eliminate a major area of contention voiced by the public and user groups alike, and will be a tremendous improvement over current practice.

4. The aquatic center will be able to offer outdoor swimming from May - September. This amenity is well received in other municipalities.
