3 State Champions and Records fall as LIAC dominates
What a weekend in Ithaca for the ladies of LIAC who traveled to the New York State Championships! Three State Champions, Three new state records, five individual state titles, seven top-five finishes, thirteen A-finalists, and twenty four swims overall at finals! Talk about dominating! Amanda Agostino, a senior at Sacred Heart raced to a new PB in the 100 Breaststroke in the C-Final. Junior Maggie Aroesty, of Long Beach, was named Outstanding Swimmer of the meet. Maggie was the state champion in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke. Her time in the 100 Breaststroke of 1:00.00 is a new NYS record! Her 200 IM time of 1:58.49 is just two tenths off the state record, set in 2006 by USA Olympian Julia Smit! Maggie was also a part of Long Beach’s 200 Medley Relay which crushed the NYS record by two seconds. That relay included two other LIAC swimmers in Kristen Romano and Morgan Harrington. Beth Caruana, a junior at St. Anthony’s High School qualified for the A- Final in the 100 Backstroke and finished 9th overall in the event. Kimmy Chan, a junior at Sewanhaka, was scheduled to be an alternate in the 500 Freestyle finals, but with a late no-show in the event had the opportunity to compete in finals! Annabelle Corcoran, of Port Washington, qualified for two A-Final swims. She did it in dramatic fashion as well! Annabelle tied for tenth in the 200 Freestyle in the prelims…which means it was time for a swim off! Annabelle won the swim off with a new best time of 1:53.41. Annabelle also swam a new PB in the 500 Freestyle in prelims of 5:02.89. First time qualifier, Julia Courtney qualified for the C-Final in the 500 Freestyle. Junior, Sam Gallego, competed well and qualified for two finals swims. She swam a new best time in the 200 Freestyle at finals in 1:54.87 to finish 14th in the state. She also competed in the C-Final of the 100 Breaststroke. Morgan Harrington, combined with Maggie and Kristen to break the state record in the 200 Medley Relay for Long Beach. Morgan also competed in the B-Final of the 500 Freestyle to finish 13th in the state. Freshman Lauryn Johnson, of Sacred Heart, certainly was not intimidated at her first state meet. Lauryn finished 2nd in the state in the 100 Butterfly in a new best time of 55.29! Lauryn also just missed breaking the 5:00 barrier in the 500 Freestyle in prelims with a new PB of 5:00.65. At finals (twenty minutes after her great 100 Butterfly) Lauryn raced to a 6th place finish in the 500! Stephanie Kaplan, a junior in Bellmore-Merrick, competed in the 200 Freestyle Relay with her team. Stephanie certainly did her part by swimming a new personal best on her leg of the relay with a 25.63! Claire McNeary, of Manhasset, swam a great 200 IM at finals to finish 4th in the state! Her time of 2:05.09 is only a half second off the All-American Consideration time. A great swim! Joanna McNulty, a sophomore at The Mary Louis Academy, swam two personal best times in prelims. Her 500 preliminary time of 5:04.89 qualified her for the A-Final in the event. She also competed in the C-Final of the 100 Butterfly after her 58.75 in prelims. Bridget O’Shaughnessy, a first time state qualifier raced into the C-Final of the 200 Freestyle. She also competed on two relays for Sacred Heart. Kristen Romano, of Long Beach, was not to be outdone by anyone! The junior won the state title in both the 100 Butterfly (54.76) and the 100 Backstroke (54.28). Both swims were within tenths of those state records! Kristen swam a great lead off leg for Long Beach’s record setting Medley relay. She also swam a 50.87 leading off the 400 Freestyle Relay for LB. Chloe Stepanek, an eighth grader in Northport, held her own at her first state meet. As one of the youngest competitors in the field, Chloe won the B-Final of the 200 Freestyle, won the C-Final of the 500 Freestyle and led off her 400 Freestyle Relay with a new PB of 53.91. Not bad for an eighth grader! Senior Cara Treble won the 200 Freestyle with a new public State Record in 1:48.01. Cara has battled in this event for the last few years and in her senior year took home the gold! Cara also finished 3rd overall in the 100 Freestyle. A nice way to end her high school swimming career! Ashley Ye, of Port Washington competed as a first time state qualifier in the 50 and 100 Freestyles! A dominating performance by LIAC indeed!
