LIAC sits in 4th place for the Women and in 8th place overall with one night of competition left!
NCSA Junior National Meet Highlights:
Maggie Aroesty (of Long Beach) wins the GOLD MEDAL and sets the National Age Group Record in the 100 Breaststroke Prelims. Her time of 58.89 makes her the fastest 16 or under woman in the event EVER! Her time also makes her the youngest woman to ever break the 59 second barrier in the event! At half the distance, Maggie was seeded 3rd headed into Thursday’s final in the 50 Breaststroke. In the finals she stepped up to move ahead of the competition to take 1st Place in the event. St. Patrick’s Day was filled with Gold for Maggie… and her night wasn’t over yet! In her final event of the evening Maggie took home another GOLD MEDAL winning the 400 Individual Medley! Next up for Maggie was the 200 Breaststroke – looking to complete her tri-fecta of Breaststroke Gold Medals Maggie was seeded first after her morning swim, and maintained her position earning her THIRD GOLD MEDAL OF THE MEET!
Kristen Romano (Long Beach) earned a 6th place finish in the 200 Backstroke. Her time of 1:56.25 is a new Metropolitan Swimming Record for 15-16 Girls. The previous record was held by 2008 Olympian Julia Smit! Kristen had a huge swim in the 200 Freestyle moving her way up from a 26th place to finish in 7th place overall! Her time was a new personal best! Kristen also had a busy night, doubling up with a second finals swim in the 400 IM finishing in 8th place in that event. Kristen had a double race in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a tie for 8th place – which resulted in a swim off. Competing head to head for the second time this morning Kristen achieved a new personal best and LIAC team record of 54.1 in the 100 backstroke! In the B final at night Kristen swam a new personal best, just .18 away from the Olympic Trial cut, finishing in 12th place, earning 15 points for LIAC.
Cara Treble (Massapequa) finishes in 14th place in a field of over 200 athletes in the 100 Freestyle – improving on her own personal best time. In the 200 Freestyle on day 3 Cara’s time from prelims moves her into second all time at LIAC, behind only LIAC great, and 3 time Olympic Trial Qualifier, Jessica Foschi! Seeded 6th heading into Finals, Cara moved up two places to take 4th place at finals in a new personal best time, within just one second of the Olympic Trials cut! Cara had a great swim in the 500 Freestyle Friday morning. She earned a spot in the B final with her 14th place finish. In finals the athletes competed in the 400meter distance and Cara finished in 16th place.
Ryan Brown (Garden City) finished the 100 breaststroke in 11th place on Wednesday night. His time of 1.04.94 bettered his LIAC record by almost a half second, and maintains his spot as the 3rd fastest athlete all time for LIAC in the event. Ryan is seeded in 9th place in the 50 breaststroke headed into Thursdays finals. His time of 25.87 makes him the fastest 18 and under LIAC Swimmer in the event ever! Ryan finished his 200 Breaststroke in 20th place, earning a chance to compete in the C final on Friday night where he finished second in his heat with a time of 2:21.57.
Lauryn Johnson (Rockville Centre) finishes in 17th place in the 200 Butterfly, again beating out over 150 other swimmers ages 18 and under. Lauryn’s time is a new LIAC record for 13-14 Girls, and places her 3rd all time for LIAC swimmers. On Friday Lauryn swam to first place in the C final of the 100 butterfly. Earning 9 points for LIAC and finishing just .8 away from her Olympic Trials cut! Lauryn started at Long Island Swim School when she was just 5 years old!
LIAC’s 200 Medley Relay team of Kristen, Maggie, Lauryn, and Cara also teamed up to take 2nd place in the event! In the 800 Freestyle Relay, Kristen, Maggie, and Cara teamed up with Anabelle to take home a 5th place finish.
Other fantastic swims this weekend came on the first night of the meet from Adam Kapusta (Valley Stream) and Anabelle Corcoran (Port Washington) in the Distance events. Anabelle earned 19th place with a new personal best by over 22 seconds in the 1650 yd Freestyle. Adam finished in 25th place, scoring points for the team with his personal best by over 8 seconds in the 1000 freestyle. CJ Arena (Amityville) also earned a coveted spot in the top 40 finishing in 38th with a new personal best in the 400 meter freestyle. Matt Manfre (Garden City) just missed qualifying for a second swim in the 200 breaststroke – taking 42nd place in a new personal best!
Aside from those athletes earning second swims, LIAC athletes are achieving success at every level this weekend. The swimmers are taking advantage of every opportunity to race, swimming new personal bests all over the place. Beth Caruana (Northport) earned a new personal best in the 100 backstroke. Ruben Cerri-Droz had an outstanding swim in the 200 breaststroke, moving up several places and swimming a new best by over 2 seconds. Michael Gregorace (Carle Place) took off almost 2 seconds in his 400 IM. Morgan Harrington (Long Beach) started her first Juniors off with a personal best in the 200 backstroke. Breaking through new barriers, Joanna McNulty (Forest Hills) dropped under the 2:06 for the first time with her personal best in the 200 Butterfly and Alice Ye (Roslyn) dipped under 4:30 for the first time in the 400 IM. Orry Zayit (Roslyn) is on track for a perfect meet with two best times by 3.5 and 2.2 seconds in the 200 fly and 200 breaststrokes respectively.
